Reuven Hazan Talks About Israel

 Dr. Reuven Hazan, Professor of Political Science at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, is an expert on the history of, as well as current Israeli politics.  His background includes helping to reform the Israeli electoral system, and he continues to advise Israeli politicians regarding the restructuring of Israel's legislative branch. A recent visiting professor at Harvard, Dr. Hazan is well qualified to help us place the current events in Israel into an historical context. A New Jewish Camping Experience

July 9-15, 2012 at Ahavas Israel and Camp Tavor

Jewish Federation of Grand Rapids is pleased to be working with Habonim Dror Camp Tavor (www.camptavor.org) to create a taste of a Jewish camping experience for our children (grades 1-5 as well as CITs in grades 9-10). The week long program will be divided between a day camp in Grand Rapids and an overnight experience at Camp Tavor in Three Rivers, MI. Family Ice Skating

Sunday, February 19, 1 pm at Patterson Ice Center

Join us for a fun family outing of ice skating and socializing on Sunday, February 19 from 1 to 3 pm at the Patterson Ice Center, 2550 Patterson Avenue between Burton and 28th Street SE. Skating is for all ages. Cost of $5 per skater covers rental, skating, and refreshments ($20 max. per family).       Caring for the Elderly

      There are 35 million people aged 65 or older currently in the U.S, representing 12.8% of the general

      More than 19% of the Jewish community is over age 65.

      About 60% of those over the age of 65 are women

      35% of older women live alone, compared to 14% of men

      An estimated 40% of all elderly individuals will spend part of their lives in nursing homes

      Nearly a quarter of the nation's elderly population requires some assistance with activities of dail

      Elderly Jews utilize long term care facilities at 1.5 times the national rate

      By 2030, the number of people over the age of 65 in the general population will double to 70 million

      The fastest growing segment of the population is those over the age of 85

      In 1997, 40% of those over the age of 65 had income that was less than 200% of the poverty level
